One important thing that I have learned so far in my journey to my Political Science Bachelors of Arts degree was why social invisibility is bad for society. It is detrimental because it prevents services from being equally accessible to everyone in our society. This same issue came to mind when I was discussing it with one of my professors named Dr. Nojeim, after I took a required class called, Crime In America. I talked about it with him after I asked him about he thinks of it.and if it could be a good thing because I once thought that social invisibility can help people who need to avoid detection. He explained to me "unless you are trying to avoid a responsibility or hide from persecution, social invisibility is a hindrance to us all". I asked him why and is that a good thing for people who need help trying to avoid the police or customs. he responded by mentioning that being ignored leads to things like urban decay, stereotyping, denial of services and communities being run into the ground due to everyone else being ignorant about it. An example of social invisibility in action is America's inner cities as that is why they have a negative connotation.
After that discussion, I read a news article about police arrival times in poor neighborhoods and that is when I learned what he meant. This article that I linked discusses this as well as the possible implications if the status quo does not change and the photo below shows us what social invisibility feels like despite not all of society will understand what is like although we can notice some examples of it in our lives.
