Weighing the pros and cons of making a difference.

Although I am a Political Science major, I also plan on getting an alternate certification after I graduate so I can use my undergraduate degree to teach high school social studies.

but I am on the fence about doing that because of many allegations people say about teaching. I hear discussions about how awful children are these days, school politics, parenting, entitlement, and some other unrealistic expectations that were not even in the job description. Despite those negatives, I also see that teachers love students and educating them. they also benefit from pensions and loan forgiveness benefits. and unlike other jobs, they can take summer vacations and although that leads to a pay cut.

With all of that aside, why teach social studies? The subjects in social studies are important because of all of the issues we have going on in our world today. we can see that people have not learned much from the past since education and the job market are focused on S.T.E.M subjects despite we keep causing problems. Examples of these problems involve the war on drugs, Republicans trying to implement pro-Christian policies and marginalization of minorities which shows that Americans: have not learned anything from prohibition, the pilgrims or the civil rights movement, which we at least were taught in 10th or 11th grade or even before that. I want to teach kids the curriculum in a way that they will be able to apply the information because history and all other social studies subjects are not worthless unless we want to keep making mistakes as a society. it is better to build strong children than fix broken adults, so my mission statement is to also prepare them for life after graduation.

*because what is happening right now is that teens are learning "nothing" and I want to change that.
